Nautical Almanac “Something” (8mm Records) CDR
Wow, this is one of the best cover's I've ever seen! It's an extra big cardboard case with a completely beautiful psychedelic design by Carly Ptak. Inside the information is printed on the back of a very nice photograph of the group, who are named as Cpteek, Thirpor, and Mesiburgr. Like the album above, these songs are about killers, but in this case the criminals in question were “murdering” the charts with their smash hit records! The songs are called “INXS”, “Smashing Pumpkings”, and “Kraftwork”. The music is pretty much just “classic style” Nautical Almanac mindswaggle gloms and blorps and whatnot. It sounds great to me now, but the other day I listened to it, and it seemed like the most annoying thing ever! I think I'd just got home from a crap day at my job though, and working with a bunch of hick morons and racist college students would make anyone crazy. Fortunately I quit that job, so I will be able to enjoy this from here on out, see?

Sounds and silence Review

(…) di nuovissimo, invece, la 8mm ci propina in edizione limitata e dalla confezione molto curata il nuovo ep dei Nautical Almanac, formazione statunitense (con all'attivo anche un disco su Load) che ben conosceranno gli amanti della sperimentazione elettronica più efferata ed oltranzista attualmente in giro (penso a band quali Wolf Eyes, Dead Machine, Hive Mind, lo stesso Aaron Dilloway solista, Mike Shiflet, etc.). “Something”, che nei titoli prende ironicamente in giro tre ‘colossi' della musica, raccoglie degli estratti del tour europeo del 2005 e vede per la prima volta il gruppo nella nuova formazione a tre, dopo che, con l'uscita dal gruppo di Nate Young (Wolf Eyes), già nella prima line-up della band, e prima dell'ingresso a titolo definitivo di Max Eisenberg, hanno suonato per po' in coppia i soli ‘Twig' Harper e Carly Ptak. I Nautical Almanac sono tra i prosecutori più accreditati ed eccitanti dell'elettronica post-throbbing Gristle, nonché tra i pochi a non aver mostrato la corda, come invece alcuni dei gruppi prima citati. In “Something”, i Nautical Almanac sviluppano e danno continuità alle intuizioni di Black Dice e Wolf Eyes sovrapponendo rumore alla melodia (non mi prendete per pazzo: i suoni qui prodotti non sono messi a cazzo: vedere il finale avangarde di kraftwork), arrivando infine a trasformare la musica in una cascata sonora devastante.
